Top Accredited Online Colleges & Universities - American International University - Baker - Axia - Phoenix

As of 2005, there are 85 online universities that are considered accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. What is accreditation? Accreditation is a validation process by which institutions of higher education are evaluated against established standards to ensure a high level of educational quality. The big question with college courses online is - how do they compare to standard college courses where you actually go in person and listen to a lecture. The verdict is still out on how well students perform in the workforce with an online college degrees versus a traditional degree. Getting a college education online is somewhat of a new opportunity and not enough evidence is out on how well they translate to work performance. Back to accreditation, "It is typically accomplished through a peer-review process in which faculty from accredited institutions help to conduct evaluations of either new non-accredited institutions or accredited institutions seeking renewal. The standards used to conduct these evaluations vary but in general they assess: the institution's mission, goals and objectives, resources and resource allocation, student admission requirements, student support services and the quality of the faculty and educational offerings".

The US accreditation of higher education institutions is not done by the government, it is a voluntary process that is implemented by private nongovernmental accrediting agencies. It's not like the universities that allow online college courses are all no name colleges. Large college universities like Boston Universty, DePaul University, Gonzaga, Marist, Oregon State University, and Villanova University all offer online college degree programs. American International University is the most recognized online college through their advertising campaigns on tv and the web. The University of Phoenix is another top online college with campuses located in major metro areas throughout the United States.

Bible Colleges Online:

Online bible colleges are very popular for those people interested in ministry. The best online bible college we found was InternetBibleCollege.com with online courses in Biblical studies, Church studies, Christian Life studies, Counseling Studies and Mission studies. Accredited study plans cost from $400-$1000 per semester. The other top ministry school online is Online-Bible-College.com with over 12,000 students from 131 nations.

What type of college courses are available online?

The great thing about all the online colleges is that most offer a complete general education of online courses so that you can fill in needed credits by going on your computer. Not all courses are offered online, but you can take English courses, Accounting courses, History courses, writing courses, astronomy courses, art courses, and many more. The question is more like, what courses aren't offered through online colleges? Definitely look into the courses offered before you commit to an online university since they are all a little different just like "brick and mortar" colleges.

Why should I care about accreditation?

Knowing something about a school's accreditation can tell you a lot about the value of the degree or course for which you are paying. If you obtain a degree or take a course from a non-accredited institution you may find that the degree is not recognized by some employers or that the course credits may not transfer to other institutions. Understanding accreditation can also help you identify and avoid "diploma mills". Accreditation is not a cut and dry issue since some schools claim accreditation through non-reputable accreditation agencies. To make sure the university you want to attend is accredited, go to the CHEA's (Council for Higher Education Accreditation) website HERE. Do a search for the institutions name or the state it is in to see if it's considered an accredited university.
